Introduction to deviance

Please answer the following questions:

1. How is the term deviance defined?

2. What is meant by the term the "relativity of deviance"? Do you agree that deviance is relative?

3. Think of three examples where behavior that is considered deviant in some cultures, but not in others. Why do you think this is?

  1. 1. Deviance, like Norms, is very much defined by the surrounding society and culture. Each society has a certain expectation for just about every situation and when this expectation is not met, deviance has occurred.

    2. Deviance is very much relative. It varies place to place, depending on the values of the given society.

    3. Ex1: A woman in the middle east walking around without her burkha ( or something like that) as compared to a woman walking around elsewhere.
Ex2: I've heard about this happening in China, where if a girl is born they will leave her on her own to die because a boy is much more valuable for harvesting and the what not. This would not be tolerated in most of the "developed" nations.
Ex3: People underage in many countries in Europe have no problem getting served alcohol, or atleast drinking with their family. Underage drinking and selling to minors can have the store's permit to sell alcohol withdrawn.
All these examples are because of the different values of the various cultures that are in this world.

  2. 1. I would say that deviance is defined by the the culture around you. The society of that culture creates the norms and expectations and though not always set in stone, they are expected to be upheld.

    2. I'm not exactly sure what the term means, but I believe that deviance is very relative. Some cultures place lots of emphasis on their norms and for them to be broken is a big deal.

    3. Example 1 - In Latin America, when a stranger is visiting a village, it is common for a local to invite them in for drinks and food, and to not accept is quite inpolite. This however would not be seen as inpolite at all in the United States.
Example 2 - Drinking underage in Europe is accepted but not in America.
Example 3 - To be nude in public is considered deviant in America, but in places around the world it is accepted.
They show the differences we have in the world.

  3. 1. Deviance is anything that stands out from the acceptable behavior of a society or group. Regardless of whether or not it is seen as "good" or "bad" by the larger group, it is deviant if it is outside their norms and expectations.

    2. Deviance is all about relativity. It could be anything so long as it is not something the majority of the population in a society would do or expect to see others doing. In order for somebody to deviate from a code, the code first has to be established, and that is where it is up for interpretation. As long as a rule can be broken, it is more than likely that in some society that rule is not instated in the first place, so deviance can only be defined broadly as a deviation from a norm, whatever that norm may be and whoever may live by it.

    3. EX1) In mainstream American culture, burning the American flag is extremely frowned upon (to the point of illegality) but protesters often consider it routine and acceptable.
EX2) Religious followers commonly conform to dietary regulations (i.e. not eating meat on Fridays in certain sects of Christianity, or eating only kosher food in Judaism) and consider it deviant for others within their circles to disobey these guidelines, while people outside of their religion would rarely give it a second thought.
EX3) Tattoos are sometimes considered deviant by the public at large in American society, but someone with tattoos would fit right in if they were in a tattoo parlor.
These things are just the result of humans' drive to group and subgroup together. Groups inherently have different traits from one another (or else they wouldn't be considered groups) and it is these differing traits that determine norms and the boundaries of deviance.

  4. 1. Not adhering to, or going against social norms.
2.That deviance depends on the rules of the society you're in, and the rules of society are different for different societies. I think that deviance is relative is a good idea, we need to accept the rules and norms of other societies.
    3. One: When in some cultures, rape is acceptable, but in ours it is not.
Two: Some cultures accept eating peopel as a norm, we do not.
Three: Ritual sacrifice is not only common but favorable in certain cultures, but in ours it is a bad thing.

  6. 1: An action that breaks out of a cultural norm. This is not always in a poor manner

2: It means that deviance is relative depending on what societal or cultural norms surround you. What would be considered deviant in one place, might be totaly fine some where else.

3: -One example is when your young and you say to a friend that "you cant cross this line! You cant come on to this side of the room!". On your side of the line, it's totaly fine that you be standing there. But if you move maybe so much as a foot, you have suddenly become a deviant. It's alright for you to be no your side, but your a deviant for even just standing on the other side.

-In some cultures, rape is considered a fairly common and not so bad thing (some times it's encouraged). But if you were to try it in the US, you ogo to jail and are heavily punished.

-Some places in the world have very little problem with mild public nudity. But if a woman was to walk down the street with out a shirt on here, she would probably be arrested.

  7. -deviance is anything different from the norm, or out of the norm that society has set.
-dont really know what relative means, but if its like it depends on the situation, then ya totally, i just went on about that in my last blog, it all depends on the situation and who is the society viewing it.
-smoking weed is deviant in most cultures but in the rastah religion it is considered the way of getting closer to god, or jah.
-in thailand not wearing a shirt in public, even for men, is not ok, they are very formal and respective there and they think thats pretty much naked and it even makes a lot of people uncomfortable.
-prostitution mis frowned upon by a lot but the government of cambodia has done almost nothing to stop it, this has brought them a lot of money, it is actually the number place for "sex tourism", how nasty that is doesnt matter to the people of cambodia as they are starting to pull thier economy back from shambles with these nasty rich tourists.

  8. 1. deviance is the act of going against a social norm
2.it means that society decides norms, therefore decides deviance. obviously its relative.
3.-its OK to talk about sex in most cultures but in ours its considered inappropriate.
-most other cultures (like Thailand) peel bananas from the other side but Americans insist on ripping the stem off
-its not OK to talk about certain things in America such as wealth, but in other places its accepted.
i have no idea why these things occur, i'm guessing its because that's just the way things are in certain cultures. if everything made perfect sense, then nothing would make any sense at all, now, would it.-brendan

  9. deviance is only definied by the society the act is taken place in. something that is deviant in one place can be widely accepted in another. but deviance is usually something that goes against the societies norms and/or values.

1.showing someone the bottom of your feet in the middle eastern countries is considered an isult there. here it is seen as someone just trying to relax.

    2. extreme ways of protesting in some countries are accepted as the right to speak what u want. in other countries some of those acts would be considered against the law.

    3. in some countries woman arnt allowed to show their faces. in this country it would be considerd deiant NOT to show your face in public
